The four surviving 1215 copies of Magna Carta were brought together for the first time last week at an event in the British Library marking the charter’s 800th anniversary.

Solicitors back moves to streamline civil court system
Proposals to ditch the High Court and county courts in favour of a single civil court have been broadly welcomed by litigation solicitors. Launching a consultation paper last week, civil law minister David Lammy said that arguments for rationalisation had been ‘gathering momentum for many years’.

Land – units of measure
The UK is moving virtually completely over to the metric system by 1 October 1995. This will have an impact on land transactions. From 1 January, the Land Registry, among other government departments, has been required to use only metric units in its work.

Data Protection Act 1984
Enquiries are being received from members of the profession about the effect of the Data Protection Act 1984 on solicitors’ practices. The act will require all those who process personal data automatically (‘data users’) to register the details of their systems and observe the statutory data protection principles, unless they fall within a number of specific and fairly limited exceptions.

Your firm and the Price Commission
Price control has been a fact of life for manufacturing companies for nearly two years. The new regulations have the practical effect of widening the scope of controls to include a major new category of businesses – medium size professional firms, including solicitors. All providers of professional services whose turnover in the last financial year was between £100,000 and £500,000 are required to identify themselves to the Price Commission.
