Labour set to back judiciary quotas
Quotas are needed to address under-representation of women and members of ethnic minorities in the senior judiciary, a report likely to become Labour party policy has recommended. Judicial Diversity: Accelerating Change, by Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC and Karon Monaghan QC, also proposes abolishing the circuit system and replacing it with regional appointments.

Lords urged to throw out HIPs
Solicitors renewed their attack on the proposed home information packs as the Commons voted through a new version of the Housing Bill, which will reinstate the provision that the packs should be compulsory.

Clean break advice to Diana
Princess Diana’s legal advisers will probably recommend that she accept a ‘once-and-for-all settlement in the region of £15m’ if the royal couple divorce, according to a leading matrimonial solicitor. Geoffrey Waters of Wedlake Bell predicted that the princess will require an annual income of £500,000 in order to maintain her current lifestyle.

Lady lawyers really are on the rampage. What alarms me is the prospect of so many determined young women leaving their families to be run by others while they catch the train to the office. No wonder there are so many broken homes.

Obscenity and the law
There is no clear evidence that pornography does corrupt. Although the trade in obscene material undoubtedly has reached very considerable proportions and although immorality among young people is alleged to have increased alarmingly in recent years, no connection between the two phenomena can be established. Indeed, apparently most of those persons hanging around Soho and similar areas and purchasing obscene books and magazines are middle-aged men.
