College to become for-profit university
The private equity-owned College of Law is to become Britain’s first for-profit university. Ministers have granted it permission to be known as the University of Law. University status is expected to pave the way for international expansion.

Open market access warning
Allowing banks, building societies and other organisations to offer legal services will destroy many high street firms and reduce access to justice across the country, solicitors have claimed. Responses to the government’s ‘In the Public Interest?’ consultation showed opposition to opening up the conveyancing and probate markets.

Fast fax technology
City firm Freshfields has just gone live with Group 4 facsimile technology. The firm already has Ricoh model 700L fax machines in its London and Paris offices. Group 4 fax machines are much faster than those via conventional Group 3 machines, thus yielding substantial savings in both transmission costs and operator time.

Visit of HRH the Prince of Wales
His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, who is the only honorary life member of the council of the Law Society, attended a private luncheon at the Society’s Hall on 2 December. The prince made a short tour of the building, which included a visit to the library. The Prince of Wales was elected an honorary life member on 8 June 1979.

EEC membership
EEC membership will have a definite, though limited, impact on the English legal system, according to an address by the lord chancellor to the Magistrates’ Association. The most novel feature of the community system was the procedure by which national courts could refer questions of directly applicable community law to the European Court for a preliminary ruling.
