Do you feel like there are a bewildering number of podcasts out there now? Podcast recommendations have replaced books in conversation, and it seems everyone either has, or is thinking about starting, a podcast. As I said to a friend who was thinking about doing a podcast: ‘Real friends don’t let friends start podcasts.’
While true crime is the overwhelming leader in podcast genres, with a surprising number of people turning into amateur detectives, the business of being a lawyer is also fertile ground. I have listened to many and there follows a list of the podcasts I think are worth a listen. Of course, I may have missed some and I apologise to those podcasters.
Business of law podcasts generally fall into five key categories.
Future of law and legaltech podcasts focus on the intersection of technology and legal practice, exploring how artificial intelligence, automation and digital transformation are reshaping the profession. These shows often feature interviews with innovators and early adopters pioneering new ways of delivering legal services.
Legal operations podcasts explore the nuts and bolts of running efficient legal departments and practices. They cover topics such as process optimisation, technology implementation, and best practices for managing legal teams and resources effectively.
In-house counsel podcasts target corporate lawyers, offering insights into the unique challenges of practising law within organisations. These shows often explore the dual role of being both a legal adviser and a business partner, featuring stories and advice from experienced corporate counsel.
Law firm leadership and management podcasts examine the business side of running a law practice, covering everything from client development and marketing to staff management and financial planning. These shows help lawyers develop the business acumen needed to thrive in today’s competitive legal market.
Boutique law firm podcasts address the specific challenges and opportunities faced by smaller, specialised practices. They offer practical advice on niche marketing, efficient operations and maintaining competitiveness against larger firms.
And if you tire of all these legal podcasts, there is always another true crime podcast waiting to turn you into the next amateur detective. Just remember: solving real cases is best left to the professionals – both in law enforcement and in legal practice.
