Treasury solicitor Susanna McGibbon and outgoing Law Society president Lubna Shuja chatted candidly about their careers at an event last Friday attended by more than 200 people. Turns out both had attended Inns of Court ‘dining sessions’ for would-be barristers – and neither knew why there were so many knives and forks, and what some of the various bits of cutlery were for. Obiter empathises – the fish knife in particular is no better at paring fish than a normal knife, or even a spoon come to that.

As well as being the most senior lawyer civil servant, McGibbon revealed that she also has a ‘quirky’ divorce practice under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, courtesy of her role as HM Procurator General. Be warned, she said: ‘If you ever get divorced and lie to the court, you could find McGibbon on your case.’
