A self-styled legal disruptor has swooped on a top 100 firm to capture partners who have been helped to start their own practice.

Excello Law announced this week it will link with Paul Cox and Roy Crozier – former joint heads of intellectual property at Foot Anstey – to create the firm Ionic Legal. The specialist IP outfit will be managed through Excello’s ‘incubator’ programme, which has already spawned four other firms in various guises.

Ionic Legal will operate from Manchester and London with Cox and Crozier leading an initial team of 10, including four others joining from Foot Anstey.

Crozier, who previously worked at Baker McKenzie and Clarke Willmott, said: ‘At Ionic Legal we will create a work environment that fosters collaboration, innovation, and satisfaction. We are excited to have broken free from traditional constraints and politics, focusing instead on delivering outstanding service to our clients and developing our business on our own terms.’

New model firm Excello Law offers a set-up option for lawyers who want to establish their own firm, offering assistance with capital investment, marketing, PR, website development and law firm management. Its roster so far includes SPG (now Pogust Goodhead), Lowry Legal, 458 law and Roberts Law.

Excello has outlined its plans to build a ‘house of brands’ and give lawyers access to the resources they need to grow a business.

Litigation specialist Cox added: ‘It is exciting to have the independence to run our own firm our way. Partnering with Excello Law allows us to avoid the administrative burdens that come with starting a new practice. Now, we can focus on what we do best.’

Excello Law was founded in 2009 by George Bisnought and has 200 partners working either remotely or in offices in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds.
