Actually, AI isn’t a toy and it’s going to make all the difference. We may need a few VERY highly qualified legal engineers (with expertise in law, AI and data) and we may need a relatively high number of diagnosticians (say 10000 nationally) to understand a client’s problem and liaise with them —in person for corporate clients, online or through call centres for retail law — but that’s about it. Legal generative AI is in its earliest stages and will be seen as a disruptive innovation. Such innovations are characterised initially by appealing to neglected markets and not being as good as an existing product. But they develop.
Everything is going to change. So remember when you’re asked to explain

“How did you go bankrupt?”

“Two ways, gradually and then suddenly.”

“What brought it on?”
