Bar chief urges training cap
The chairman of the bar has called for legislation to cap the number of places on legal professional training courses amid growing concern over debt-laden graduates unable to secure jobs.

Serial killer’s adviser insists he has right to practise
The controversial Italian legal adviser to dead serial killer Harold Shipman – being probed by the Law Society – has told the Gazette he has the right to practise in the UK. A Law Society spokesman said: ‘Giovanni Di Stefano is not registered with or regulated by the Law Society.’

Les liaisons dangereuses
As politicians seemingly tumble into bed with just about anyone who is passing by in the street, questions are being asked about how high a fence should be cast around a solicitor’s sexuality when it comes to dealing with clients. Firmly in favour of the chastity belt is Mr Justice Thorpe, who sits in the Family Division.

The Society for Computers and Law
Over 70 solicitors, barristers and others were present at the Law Society’s Hall to hear Lord Justice Scarman introduce the newly formed Society for Computers and Law Ltd, of which he is the first president. There were questions from the audience from which it was clear that the computer could never do away with the lawyer and was no substitute for legal judgement although it might have an effect upon the style of legislation.

Prisoners of war
Two solicitors and one articled clerk who were prisoners of war in Italy were successful in escaping at the time of the armistice. Captain J.E.K. Walters escaped from a railway train and roamed about Italy for a month. Captain Walters was kind enough to call at the Law Society and give details of activities at Camp PG21 where he was for some time secretary of the camp Law Society.
