MPs probing the home buying and selling process will today move on to the next stage of their inquiry – hearing from industry bodies the Home Buying and Selling Group and Conveyancing Association for their opening evidence session.

The House of Commons levelling up, housing and communities committee announced in March an inquiry to examine the transaction process, information available to buyers, and the role of conveyancers and estate agents.

This afternoon, the committee will hear from Kate Faulkner, chair of the Home Buying and Selling Group, Paula Higgins, chief executive of HomeOwners Alliance and Maria Harris, chair of Open Property Data Association as part of the first session.

MPs will then hear from Mairead Carroll, RICS senior property specialist at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, Timothy Douglas, head of policy and campaigns at Propertymark and Beth Rudolf, director of delivery at the Conveyancing Association.

‘The cross-party group of MPs are likely to ask questions on a range of topics relating to the effectiveness of the existing process for buying and selling homes in England,’ the committee said. ‘MPs are likely to ask how the consumer experience could be improved and whether improvements are likely to be gained by voluntary initiatives or whether legislation may be necessary,' the committee said.

'Material information' will undoubtedly be discussed - an issue that has divided those working in the residental property sector.
