A ‘phishing’ email from an apparently plausible email address for Solicitors Regulation Authority chair Anna Bradley was sent to an unknown number of figures in the legal world this morning. Law Society Gazette journalists were among those who received a message from 'anna.bradley@sra.org.uk' inviting recipients to view a document.

The Law Society’s IT department warned that the invitation was a phishing attempt and should be deleted immediately. Phishing is a tactic used by organised criminals to acquire login details which can then be used in financial and other frauds.

In a statement timed 1627 headed 'Malicious email purporting to be from the SRA', the regulator said:

'It has come to our attention that a malicious email was sent this morning (9 November) at 1036 appearing to be from the SRA.

'Please delete the email. If you followed links and provided your username and password, you should reset your password immediately.

'We are sorry for any inconvenience.'

In June this year the SRA warned of the danger of cybercrime involving email.
