Obiter is reluctant to define the qualities of a great lawyer. But the ability to keep a clear head and execute the next move while upside down in a maelstrom of white water may be one of them. On that basis, Rebecca Skirrow of PI firm Minster Law should go far.

Skirrow (pictured afloat – just) has been picked to represent Great Britain in freestyle kayaking. Apparently this involves performing surf and gymnastic style manoeuvres in white water waves and holes. Competitors have to perform as many different moves as possible in 45 seconds. ‘What I love most about kayaking is the multiple levels of challenge,’ says Skirrow, who recently qualified as a solicitor through Minster’s training contracts programme.

Training includes three sessions a week on the water, the firm says. She also follows a strict nutritional plan – yes, it’s a case of having your kayak and eating it.
