Most employees told before noon that the main task scheduled for the day no longer needs doing are quite content with the news.
Not so the master of the rolls Sir Geoffrey Vos, who said he was ‘disappointed’ not to spend Tuesday grappling with ‘rather interesting’ issues of data protection law.
Leave.EU, the pro-Brexit campaign group, had been due to appear before the Court of Appeal to challenge a fine imposed by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) back in 2019. Alas, nobody turned up on its behalf, prompting Vos to dismiss the appeal.
Christopher Knights, who was representing the ICO, told the court that ‘in some ways, I’m disappointed – the issues are interesting’. (Perhaps getting his £7,000 fees in full will soften the blow.)
Not to be outdone on a point of legal geekery, Sir Geoffrey agreed: ‘The irony is that… we are disappointed because we found the points rather interesting.’
As the old saying goes: ‘Choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.’
