Obiter's musings rarely rank among the Gazette’s most popular, so we were pleasantly surprised to discover that our piece on the Association of Lifetime Lawyers complaining to BBC bosses about how wills are executed in EastEnders’ Walford ranked top of the pops.

Clearly, the piece hit a nerve with readers. ‘If we’re having this conversation, can we also talk about the American fictional lawyers (Suits et al.) who manage to act for a wrongly accused bystander in a cartel murder one week and a grieving widow in a probate dispute the next, all while managing a giant corporate merger and a team of six associates?,’ one reader entreated.

This got us thinking. While one must suspend an element of disbelief when it comes to the portrayal of lawyers on TV, which show is the least authentic? We’ll start with our favourite soap, Coronation Street, upon whose cobbles law firm owner Adam Barlow has not once been heard to moan about the SRA’s accounts rules or legal aid bureaucracy.
