‘What could possibly go wrong?’ tweeted family barrister Amy Stout, who was in the Supreme Court this week – and 37.5 weeks pregnant.

Fast forward a few hours.

‘To answer my own seemingly rhetorical question – baby was born at 3.30am. I ended up getting a taxi from the Supreme Court to the hospital (only 5 mins away). What a day!’ the head of pupillage at London chambers 3 Dr Johnson’s Buildings said today.

Whilst Obiter is relieved that Stout didn’t have to give birth in the Supreme Court (though Obiter can think of far less glamorous birthplaces), we can’t help but picture what might have happened if baby had wanted to arrive a few hours earlier. ‘My lords and ladyship, may we request a short adjournment… and a few towels?’

In the meantime, Obiter hopes Stout - a Supreme Court star following yesterday - and her mini pupil are doing well. A huge congratulations from all of us.
