Remember the weather on Saturday? Perhaps you cursed the wind and the rain on the way to the shops - or did you decide to stay at home instead?
If so, spare a thought for Law Society Yacht Club member William Pinnock tying a vital knot on the foredeck of the yacht Flying Formula as it braved gale force winds and lumpy seas in the 55-mile Round-the-Island Race. Pinnock was one of seven crew aboard the Sigma 38, chartered by the club from the University of Southampton.
The forecast weather was described as 'lively' in the pre-race briefing, which turned out to be something of an understatement. Of the 939 yachts scheduled to set out from Cowes, only 153 - 16% - actually managed to complete the course. Flying Formula was one, earning 6th place in its class of 28 boats (the rest dropped out).
The Round The Island Race was one of several events being organised by Law Society Club members this season. We are hoping that the rest will be less gruelling. Sailors of all abilities are welcome: see www.lawsocyc.org.uk
