A nice surprise at the end of last month’s London Legal Walk was to find smooth jazz outfit Permission to Appeal playing the Law Society Common Room.

Band leader Mike Roberts (trumpet) is a clinical negligence solicitor at London firm Leigh Day, while PJ Hopper (bass) is a legal cashier at the firm. Chris Esdaile (keys) was a solicitor at LD and is now a legal adviser to torture survivor group Redress.

‘We’re sort of the Leigh Day house band,’ says sax player Luigi Sterlini, who, in his day job, sits as a district judge at Clerkenwell and Shoreditch County Court, London.

Upcoming gigs include Central London County Court’s Courtyard Party on 25 June.
