What’s dark and dingy and more like a hoarder’s cupboard than a living room? The answer is no longer the Royal Courts of Justice press room, parked in a discreet location on the building’s ground floor.

Work that could be described as miraculous has transformed the journalists’ den. Not only new chairs and tables, but a clean carpet, a lick of paint and even running water. No longer will court reporters need to rinse out their mugs in the toilet sinks. An informal reopening ceremony last week was graced by the lady chief justice and the presiding judge of the media and communications list, Mr Justice Nicklin.

It is not an easy feat to get some TLC in any court building, which makes the upgrade all the more impressive. The clearout was an achievement in itself. Those who had the dubious pleasure found old judgments (some around 30 years old), invitations to an event held by the wine society (now sadly defunct), as well as ancient IT equipment.
