Kudos to Derek Sweeting QC and his colleagues at the Bar Council for reviving the summer tradition of drinks receptions for journalists last week.

Obiter joined hacks from The Times, Guardian and the Press Association’s excellent Royal Courts of Justice team in toasting a return to a kind of normality.

Alas, one person who could not join in was the Bar Council’s director of external relations Steve Rudaini, who was stuck at home after being pinged by the NHS Covid-19 app.

Of course, the Bar Council has an advantage in hosting such events – the building it shares with the Bar Standards Board has its own private outdoor terrace overlooking Lincoln’s Inn.

Obiter’s diary has plenty of blank evenings this summer, if any law firms with similar spaces want to keep up this summer tradition.
