Keen to feel like an old wizard, Obiter attended the Junior Solicitors Network summit last week. An event for junior and aspiring lawyers, but who’s to say this old dog can’t learn new tricks?

There were plenty of interesting panel discussions, but Law Society deputy vice president Mark Evan’s fireside chat was a highlight. His positive mindset came through as he spoke about his early career, his family, fatherhood, and running - with jokes thrown in for good measure.

Evans: ‘Stay positive, believe in yourself and make it happen’

He spoke of his presidential priorities including equality, diversity, inclusion; social mobility; mental health and wellbeing; law taught in primary and secondary schools; and career breaks and sabbaticals.

One solid piece of advice from Evans was in answer to a question from the audience, when he told the gathered juniors to ‘know their limits’ and be able to turn assignments down from time to time.

He said: ‘Learn to say no. I mean, by chance I volunteered once as a cub scout leader, I was there for five years.’

It seems nice guys don’t always finish last as Evans’ optimistic outlook came through with his final top tips to juniors.

‘Stay positive, believe in yourself and make it happen. Nobody else can make it happen, only you.

‘Nothing, believe me, is impossible. There is no reason at all…why you can’t be where I am.’
