Justice minister Dr Phillip Lee is not high-profile. Perhaps that is what prompted him to wonder off-piste last week while musing on Brexit.

On leaked Treasury reports detailing how much worse off we’ll be, Lee tweeted: ‘If these figures turn out to be anywhere near right, there would be a serious question over whether a government could legitimately lead a country along a path that the evidence and rational consideration indicate would be damaging.’

Whoops. A visit to the headmaster’s office swiftly followed in the person of the chief whip, who declared it ‘best to air these views in private’.

Wise counsel. With the revolving door at Petty France in a permanent spin, Lee should take care not to end up on the wrong side of it.
