In 1764, George III was on the throne, an eight-year-old Mozart performed a private concert for the monarch, politician John Wilkes was expelled from the House of Commons and a law firm was founded.
This year, Ellisons Solicitors, with offices across Essex and Suffolk, celebrates its 260th anniversary.
The firm was founded by William Mason, a scrivener who lived in Colchester and set up shop in the Essex city. The name Ellisons comes from Oborne James Ellison, who joined the firm in 1888. Once Howard Ellison & Morten, it became Ellison and Co in 1937.
To mark the anniversary the firm is hosting events and fundraisers across its five offices in Bury St Edmunds, Colchester, Chelmsford, Ipswich and Frinton-on-Sea.
Managing partner Guy Longhurst said the anniversary would be used to focus on ‘supporting the charities, clubs and associations in the communities we work and live in’. The firm will be raising funds for the Brain Tumour Charity and Essex Wildlife Trust as well as supporting local law clinics.
Longhurst added: ‘We are truly grateful for the success Ellisons has enjoyed over the years. Now, with 300 colleagues, 29 partners and a leading training programme to support the next generation, Ellisons continues to go from strength to strength.’
