Law Society’s Gazette, March/April, 1971

Letter to the editor – advertisingNo one has yet considered the connection between advertising and the present urgent need of the solicitor to improve his image. However, there are two kinds of advertising – the subtle and the brash.

Subtle advertising is the production of books and leaflets designed to inform the public about the solicitor and his work.

Brash advertising is the mass appeal type designed to encourage people to consult a solicitor in direct terms, for example, ‘Drop in before you drop dead!’, ‘Where there’s a Will there’s a way for us to do it cheaper’, or even ‘Is there room for a solicitor in your cupboard instead?’. [For the benefit of our younger readers, this is an allusion to a TV commercial for a bank that claimed it was so helpful to customers, it was like having a bank manager in your wardrobe to answer your queries instantly.]

While both kinds of advertising will increase the work coming into a solicitor’s office, only subtle advertising will improve the solicitor’s image…L. F. Manning, London WC2
