Number of practitioners rising fast

The number of solicitors in private practice grew at its fastest rate for nine years in 2014, further confirming the profession’s recovery from economic crisis and recession. As of 31 July 2014, there were 130,382 solicitors with practising certificates; 90,306 were in private practice.

Fears over single civil court

City litigators have cast doubt over the value of a single civil court, saying they see ‘more obvious potential benefit’ in rationalising the Queen’s Bench and Chancery Divisions into a single division with specialist lists. The London Solicitors Litigation Association was responding to the Department for Constitutional Affairs’ consultation on combining the High Court and county court.

The need for a family court

The Law Society’s Family Law Committee believes there is an overwhelming need for reform of the present system by which family law is administered. The best answer would lie in the setting up of a unified family court to deal exclusively with all family law matters.

Extradition and the Stonehouse case

Extradition proceedings against Mr John Stonehouse, Labour MP for Walsall North, will start in Melbourne as soon as the Scotland Yard documents on the case can be placed before the court. This may take some time because of the complexity of the case.

Mr Collins asked the Home Secretary if he would consider ways, either by extending the Legal Aid Act 1949, or by other means, whereby innocent persons charged with criminal offences could be assisted. Major Lloyd-George replied that the courts in England and Wales already had power, when satisfied that such a course was desirable in the interests of justice, to grant legal aid to an accused person who was committed for trial.
