Manifesto calls for ‘climate justice’
The creation of an international court for the environment, in which actions could be brought on behalf of people displaced or otherwise harmed by global warming, is among measures proposed in a ‘manifesto for climate justice’ published by the International Bar Association last week in Tokyo.

First appeals via video link
The Court of Appeal used video technology for the first time last week in a pilot scheme that the court service hopes will become standard practice. In a link-up with Hull Prison, three appeals against sentences were heard without the need for prisoners to be transported to London.

Role for solicitors in streamlined civil system
A role for solicitors as ‘procedural judges’ responsible for managing litigation has been signalled by Lord Woolf, who is seven months into a two-year review of civil justice aimed at rooting out delays endemic to the current system. Woolf acknowledged that his work to simplify procedures could cause a surge of new cases.

Secure in your electronic office?
One of the unfortunate features of electronic office technology is that it can often prove in practice to be the proverbial double-edged sword. On one hand, a device like a word processor can create untold benefits in the production of documents, yet at the same time be the source of all sorts of new problems, a classic instance being when the operator inserts the wrong floppy disk in the wrong drive and erases information which may have taken months to collect.

All-graduate profession
Clearly, a person who is a graduate should, but not necessarily will, have the necessary aptitude and ability, given the right training, to become a solicitor. But that in no way should discourage anyone else from so qualifying, given the proper circumstances.
