Government to give LiPs help

Justice minister Simon Hughes has said the government will make an announcement soon on tackling issues raised by the growing number of litigants in person. Hughes told the Liberal Democrat party conference in Glasgow that he had persuaded Ministry of Justice colleagues to find a solution to the issue of unrepresented parties.

Child law solicitors face police checks

Solicitors acting for children and clients with mental illnesses are to be subject to the highest level of background checks from this month, it has emerged. The Law Society will run detailed checks via the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). The Society has been granted permission to access the highest level of police intelligence held by the CRB.

Red card over sex harassment

Law firms could face huge damages claims if they do not take steps to prevent sexual harassment in their offices, employment lawyers have warned. The European Court’s recent decision in Marshall removed the cap on sex discrimination damages and lawyers are now warning that large awards for sexual harassment in the workplace are on their way.

The Post Office goes metric

It’s now official! The Post Office will be metric as from September 1975, and this will affect every business in the country. If you ask your franking machine operator how many grams there are to the ounce (do you know, by the way?) and you get the right answer, you have no need to worry. If not, a series of wall charts giving current postal rates is available.
