Quindell in libel victory

Stock exchange-listed legal services company Quindell said it had won its libel action against a US analyst which had questioned the accuracy of its financial statements. The analyst, Gotham, failed to acknowledge or defend the claim.

England’s first black High Court judge

Linda Dobbs QC is to become England’s first black High Court judge. She said: ‘Whilst this appointment might be seen as casting me into the role of standard bearer, I am simply a practitioner following a career path. I am confident, nevertheless, that I am the first of many to come.’

Court dress

I take grave exception to your correspondent’s denunciation of waistcoats. As an American I refuse to wear a jacket in the office, but I am sufficiently British not to wish to sit in my suspenders. The waistcoat (which I would describe as a vest) provides an admirable and comfortable intermediate which also allows me a few extra pockets to carry all the things my tailor abhors.

The problem of homosexuality

It is difficult to see why the law should continue to differentiate between homosexual and heterosexual acts. But the problem is too great and too complex to be solved merely by passing an Act of Parliament. Reform of the law is desirable, but it would be of little use unless it were accompanied by a change in public attitude.

Honours and awards

Black, George Joseph, DFC and Bar, acting Squadron Leader, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, awarded the Distinguished Service Order. While under his command the squadron has destroyed much enemy mechanical transport and railway trucks and caused severe damage to many bridges and railway lines. He is articled to Mr C.J. Hardwicke, of Cardiff.
