Fears over new offence

Laws to crack down on corrupt solicitors who collude with organised criminals are unnecessary and could cause innocent people to be convicted, the Law Society has warned. It was responding to the government’s announcement in the Queen’s speech that a Serious Crimes Bill would create an offence of ‘participation in an organised crime group’.

Call for legal services authority

The Legal Services Commission, Legal Services Ombudsman and Consumers Association have all called on Sir David Clementi to recommend independent regulation of the legal profession. Consultation on Clementi’s proposals for regulatory reform closed last week.

Justice for the people?

In an interview on 29 May, Lord Woolf unveiled plans ‘to make justice speedier and more affordable for ordinary people’. These plans include the creation of procedural judges who will simplify civil actions, transfer control from the parties to the courts and lay down a timetable for cases to be heard.

The National Prosecution Service

The government has announced that it is to press ahead with its plans for a national, centrally funded, independent prosecution service. The decision is worthy of study. To those who believe that the panacea for all ills is for the state to take over, no doubt the proposals will seem sound enough. But others may have their doubts.

The plan to move Companies House to Cardiff is NOT really necessary as in Leonard Street, London EC1, right adjacent to Companies House, is a large, sound building which is COMPLETELY VACANT. If this building was acquired then most of the problems of space, storage etc would be solved.
