Scotland and law: going it alone?

Contradictions abound in the debates leading up to the Scottish independence referendum. The SNP manifesto includes an outline for a Scottish supreme court, and a promise that high-value civil cases, and the legal fees that come with them, will be kept in Scotland. Firm promises are made about the protection of human rights and membership of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Money Laundering Regulations 2003 made under the Proceeds of Crime Act came into force this week, but the earth continues to rotate steadily on its axis. While compliance is likely to be expensive – especially for medium-sized firms – non-compliance could prove even more costly.

Director general of the Law Society?

The demands of the job call for the creation of a new paid post of an appointed director general. The successful candidate must be able to deal with government at all levels, the leaders of other professions and all sectors of our own profession as well. He or she must be able to appeal to the members of the large City firms on one hand and the backwoodsmen of the British Legal Association on the other. Skill and a positive thirst for dealing with the media must also be a prior requirement.

Postbox: Graduates only

I looked in vain in your columns in the 2 January issue for any mention of the Council decision to let only graduates enter the profession. It may be that no one wrote in to express dismay or, more likely, that no one wrote in to congratulate the Council.

I wish to express my dismay.
