Results warning as credit crunch bites
Strong financial results being reported by firms across the country will not yet truly reflect the global economic downturn, City experts warned this week. National firm Pinsent Masons reported 2007 revenues up £21m to £213m – an 11% rise on last year.

Dismay at legal aid pay rates freeze
Solicitors reacted with dismay this week after the Lord Chancellor’s Department confirmed there would be no increase in remuneration rates for legal aid work for the second year running. The last increase was in 1996.

To Russia with law
A most interesting feature was a visit to a ‘Palace of Marriages’. Weddings in the Soviet Union may take place simply in a register office but for those who wish for more ceremony, special palaces of marriages are available. The registrar gives a brief speech and formally declares the couple married, whereupon an official presses a button producing canned church bells.

Divorce in the county court
Although we do not imagine that there will be any mass withdrawal from legal aid divorce work in the county court, it would be a mistake for those who are responsible to underestimate the deep feeling of resentment felt by the solicitors’ profession.
