The Ministry of Justice has shut down about one in five claims management companies in the past year, according to figures obtained by the Gazette. The closures were partly prompted by 9,570 complaints from the public.

Approval of treaty triggers international court

The International Criminal Court will come into being on 1 July after the treaty that creates it receives its 60th ratification this week. The treaty, adopted on 17 July 1998, was expected to take decades to ratify.

City firm appoints lay chairman

Mishcon de Reya claims to have broken new ground by going outside the profession for a new chairman. The 27-partner firm announced that businessman John Jackson will become chairman upon the retirement of Lord Mishcon.

Budget comment

The chancellor of the exchequer described his budget on 9 March as ‘a budget for industry, for jobs, for people’. One industry that grows at a rate which seems to dwarf the rate of inflation is the budget industry itself. The Inland Revenue issued 14 press releases running to 27 pages on budget day itself.

North Kensington Neighbourhood Law Centre

The Centre is in an ex-butcher’s shop in the heart of North Kensington and is still the only neighbourhood law centre in this country. It provides a free service to residents.
