Women trailing at magic circle elite
The magic circle’s commitment to diversity will again be called into question after the proportion of women making partner in 2013 fell below 20%. The quintet of UK-based firms appointed just 13 women worldwide out of a total of 73. In last year’s round, 24 of the 95 new partners were women.

QC system facing the axe
The lord chancellor, Lord Irvine, this week postponed the 2004 silk competition pending the outcome of consultation on the QC system – raising the possibility that this year’s 121 new QCs could be the last ever. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the appointments, Lord Irvine said it is clear there is an appetite for change.

Norton Rose picks up the pieces
Norton Rose, the City law firm most severely affected by last Saturday’s Bishopsgate bomb blast, has 80% of its staff back at their desks within a week of the explosion. The firm has moved back into three of its four buildings in the Square Mile.

The bill requires all personal data users and computer bureaux as defined to register descriptions of data held by them, the purposes for which they hold data, the sources from which the data are obtained, persons to whom the data are to be disclosed and the territories to which the data may be transferred.

How VAT is working
One of the first VAT invoices we received was from a well-known firm of solicitors for a copy letter supplied at our request. Their modest charge was:

VAT: 1p
Total: 11p
We resisted the temptation to pay this by bankers draft and sent them a postal order.
