A team of non-solicitors with financial support from the founder of betting website Betfair has announced a legal services venture. Leeds-based Brilliant Law will be run on a corporate model. It was approved as an alternative business structure last month.

Lawyers offer £43m savings option
A costed package of five measures aimed at cutting legal aid without diminishing access to justice was presented by the Law Society this week. The package, jointly agreed with the bar, is calculated to save £43 million in 1993/94 – precisely the amount the lord chancellor hopes to save by cutting legal aid eligibility.

Solicitors’ earnings
It has come to my notice that Messrs Pinsent & Co in Birmingham will, so it is alleged in the local press, from September 1984 be paying articled clerks a starting salary in the region of £6,000 per annum. The Birmingham Law Society suggested guide is £3,058 for non-law graduates and £3,300 for law graduates.
