‘Shambles’ as J-Day looms
Judges in the vanguard of the post-Jackson costs management era will go into April armed with just 4.5 hours of training, a quarterly newsletter and a podcast. Costs lawyers warned that many judges are ‘ill-prepared and ill-equipped’ to deal with the reforms.

Solicitors and seller’s packs
Solicitors have been urged to take the initiative after the government reintroduced controversial plans to launch a seller’s pack that includes a survey. The government this week issued a consultation on home information packs – as seller’s packs are now called - admitting it was the most contentious issue in the draft Housing Bill.

Estate agents muzzled
The end of estate agents’ property descriptions which do not quite tell the whole truth is in sight. On 4 April the Property Misdescriptions Act comes into force, bringing with it the prospect of hefty fines for agents who give out misleading or inaccurate information about homes they are offering for sale.

Lawyers and technology
At long last the needs of lawyers in relation to all forms of new technology will be studied in a project to be undertaken by the National Law Library with partial funding by the Department of Industry. The NLL has appointed Arthur Andersen and Co, the management consultants, as its partner in the project. The study will cover a representative cross-section of firms but will concentrate on those with between three and eight partners.

Prime Minister visits the Law Society
On Tuesday 13 March, the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Edward Heath, lunched at 60 Carey Street with the president of the Law Society Sir Desmond Heap. Also present were HE Mons Robert Rothschild, Belgian ambassador, and the Rt Hon Lord Widgery, the lord chief justice.
