Who’d be a top lawyer at the BBC? Well, such a challenging role does have its compensations. We are delighted to see that two long-serving in-house solicitors made the list of top-earners at the corporation.

Group legal counsel Sarah Jones (pictured) pulls down £315,000-£319,999 (a chunky increase on the £200,000-£249,999 she was earning as recently as 2017). Her assistant Peter Ranyard, director, corporate legal, takes home £205,000-£209,999 (compared with £150,000-£199,999 in 2017).

Sarah Jones

Oxford law graduate Jones, a senior associate at Allen & Overy before she started her 27-year stint with Auntie, ranks alongside the likes of Laura Kuenssberg and Mishal Husain in the pay stakes – but well ahead of other household names such as Jeremy Vine and Sara Cox.

Bet she’s earning every penny – this week in particular.
