Solicitors who have made a long-lasting difference to the lives of others have been celebrated at the Law Society of England and Wales’ Legal Heroes 2024.

Winners and nominees attended the ceremony this month with friends and family to celebrate their achievements and efforts for pushing positive change.

Legal Heroes were nominated for their work in a wide range of projects and charities, such as protecting animal welfare, advocating for Windrush victims and tackling overseas sexual abuse. One nominee was recognised for working on ‘Law for Change’, supporting people who cannot access justice.

Others have worked to improve social mobility and provide young people from lower income backgrounds with the opportunity to gain insight into a legal career and showcase their talents.

Law Society president Nick Emmerson said: 'Our justice system cannot work without solicitors and this is a good time to celebrate some of those dedicated lawyers who selflessly support their local communities. These are people who use their skills and expertise to assist those in need demonstrating values that are at the heart our profession.'

Legal Hero winner Duncan McNair, who received an award for his work protecting Asian elephants through the Animals Act 2023, said: 'I'm very proud and surprised but also very gratified because this is a cause that desperately needs public attention.

'We got a great deal with the Animals Act, but now is time to really build on that and urge government to implement these crucial measures for the well-being and in fact the survival of numerous species of animals around the world mostly highly endangered.'
