London’s 100 Club has hosted many big names over its 75 years: Louis Armstrong, the Sex Pistols, the Stones. Last night it was the turn of solicitors (and a few barristers). Rockers from TWM Solicitors, 2KBW, Trowers & Hamlins and Shearman & Sterling performed in a battle of the bands staged by Law Rocks! - the global fundraising initiative.
Law Rocks! - motto 'rock globally, give locally' - was founded in London in 2009 and has raised millions of dollars for good causes worldwide. At last night's event Trowers & Hamlins' band the Skinless Lizards and Shearman & Sterling's A Street Band shared the honours with high energy performances that took the venue (and Obiter) back to the club's sweaty punk heyday. For Obiter, the standout numbers were Shearman & Sterling's Sweet Child of Mine, Trowers' Don't Look Back in Anger - and TWM's Shout!
The competition rules: bands must play covers rather than inflict their own material - and perform no number more than once. Oh, and Mustang Sally is banned.
Next gig: Law Rocks! Singapore on 12 September. More information at www.lawrocks.org.
