And so to Legal London’s newest watering hole for a sneak preview ahead of its opening on Monday. The Last Judgment, on the corner of Carey Street and Chancery Lane, is the latest occupant of the magnificent former headquarters of the Union Bank following the departure of JD Wetherspoon in March.

The new owner, Berkeley Inns, is going for a legal theme: Obiter was delighted to see Sir Edward Coke’s portrait remains in pride of place in the dining area. We were even more pleased to note that, since we last reported on the refurbishment, the first ‘e’ in ‘judgement’ has been dropped.

Now about that animated gavel on the website…

The opening comes none too soon for the London Legal Support Trust, organiser of the biggest mass event on the legal calendar. On 13 June, some 10,000 people from all branches of the profession and beyond are expected to take part in the 19th London Legal Walk, which culminates in a street party in Carey Street. We understand the traditional outdoor bar will be back, accepting tokens from survivors of the 10km walk to raise funds to help sustain free specialist legal advice.
