‘Ladeez ’n chennulmen! The main event of the evening – in 15 rounds, a battle for the title Rule of Law Heavyweight Champion OF THE WORLD. In the red corner, the Chagos Lip, Richard Hermer KC, undefeated current attorney general. In the blue corner, the Great Bald Hope, shadow attorney general David Wolfson KC!’
If only. Hopes for a debate between the AG and his opposite number on their widely divergent visions of the rule of law were first floated by Obiter’s distinguished colleague Joshua Rozenberg. They received a boost last week when Lord Wolfson accepted a challenge handed down by Dean Godson, director of free-market thinktank Policy Exchange, for a 15-round ‘rumble in the jungle’.
‘It won’t be so much Foreman v Ali as the Mumble in the Jungle,’ Wolfson joked.
Perhaps optimistically, Rozenberg suggested last week that given much common ground between the contestants, ‘perhaps one of the advocates might persuade the other to shift his position slightly.
‘For the time being, though, that prospect seems a long way off,’ he conceded.
