Sir Geoffrey Cox is largely known for two things: his booming and often entertaining voice at the despatch box during his time as attorney general, and for being the MP who consistently records the highest earnings outside parliament. And this year – after not taking any outside work during his time as attorney general – is set to be a veritable beanfeast.
The Conservative MP for Torridge and West Devon will this month mark one year as a consultant to City firm Withers LLP, for which he is expected to receive £468,000 in return for 48 hours work a month – a more then decent £812.50 an hour – in addition to £327,000 received in the last year from Withers for legal services provided. He has also registered £85,000 in payments from London practice Khan Partnership Solicitors and £15,000 from FidLaw, based in the West End, for providing legal services.
In total, Cox is earning almost 11 times his annual MP’s salary, which of course he is entitled to do. But perhaps the electorate might themselves be entitled to ask what Cox is doing in the day job, having not spoken in parliament on any subject since January 2020.
