Less than eight weeks to go. Yes, it is almost time for the biggest legal fundraising event of the year – the London Legal Walk, which takes place on 17 June.
For the benefit of new readers, the walk, now in its 21st year, involves many thousands of lawyers, with colleagues, friends and not a few dogs, treading a 10k course in central London to raise funds for legal advice services. Last year, some 16,000 people took part, raising nearly £1m from loyal sponsors.
This year, organisers the London Legal Support Trust hope to exceed both figures. By this week, some 5,700 walkers in more than 800 teams had signed up.
According to the trust, the walk is not just about fundraising – vital though that is – but ‘a celebration of the legal community’s commitment to access to justice’. Oh, and did we mention the post-walk street party behind the Royal Courts of Justice?
More information can be found here.
And there is a special treat for early birds too. The sprightly, though not always youthful, judges and barristers who last year inaugurated the Bar v Bench 10k race – running the course before work in the morning of the walk – will be doing it again this year. They’ll be joined by a team from the Law Society. Watch this space for details of runners and riders.
As official media partner, the Gazette will be on the spot throughout the day. Look out for our T-shirts and come and say hello.
