Obiter plunged through the Scottish darkness in a 4×4 to see City lawyer Hannah twice take a leap of faith in Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins series.
But she made an ominous start to the fifth day of tackling the special forces selection course, messing up a backwards dive into freezing water. ‘No 20, turn around. Get a grip of your body through your mind,’ bellowed chief instructor Ant. ‘Go!,’ he repeated four times before Hannah finally took the plunge. ‘You’re taking the piss. Absolutely f****** shambles,’ Ant roared after her.
Obiter, having tripped over after one too many on a night out, could empathise with Hannah’s fears. ‘Falling is just a really terrifying thought,’ she said, ‘You’re completely out of control.’ And the 35-year-old mother of two revealed: ‘I’m a person who really likes to be in control.’ But her performance cut little ice with the directing staff who later hauled her in for interrogation. ‘I think she might be trying too hard. I don’t know,’ mused Ant. Having revealed her inner turmoil under questioning, Hannah admitted: ‘I am scared of failing because I have to do this.’ Obiter could barely watch as a helmeted and harnessed Hannah redeemed herself in the illusion jump across a terrifying chasm which, according to directing staff Foxy, ‘tests people’s bottle.’
Perhaps this is was a turning point in Hannah’s strategy.
SAS: Who Dares Wins is on Channel 4 on Sunday (9pm).
