‘Play up, play up, and play the game!’, as Sir Henry Newbolt put it in his famous poem. The game being cricket, of course.

Did you know the Law Society Cricket Club used to play matches at the Oval? No longer, alas. ‘Different times, different times’, as Harold Pinter wrote in another poem about the greatest game.

Yet the club is still going strong – and as this season closes, is looking for new players ‘of all shapes and sizes’ for next year.

‘The club still plays good quality friendly matches against nice people at nice grounds,’ says treasurer Rob Henderson. ‘We also play cricket annually in Oporto in Portugal, against the local team, and a team of special advisers from the House of Commons.’ There’s also a (doubtless feisty) T20 match against the bar.

The club is open to all genders, says Rob. Though the playing membership is currently all-male, women players have been welcomed in the past and the club would be ‘delighted’ to do so again.

Prospective bowlers, fly slips, and silly mid ons and offs should email Rob Henderson at astuterob1966@gmail.com.
