The Supreme Court will be sitting in Manchester next month, the first time the court has ever sat outside one of the UK’s capitals, and to celebrate it has asked Twitter followers to name a jumper-wearing teddy bear.

Lord Reed and six other Supreme Court Justices will sit at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre for three hearings from Monday 6 March to Thursday 9 March.

The country’s highest court’s Twitter account announced that the ‘Supreme Court teddy bear’ would be accompanying the court when it sat in Manchester and has asked followers for suggestions by 1 March.

Though many commenters have made suggestions, including Hale after Lady Hale, Omega, Obiter and puns on the word bear, some have suggested the tweet, which was accompanied with photos of the toy teddy in parliament, is infantile.

Speaking at the time of the visit’s announcement, His Honour Judge Bird said: 'Accessible justice matters to everyone and I hope that having the Supreme Court at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre will encourage more people to take an interest in justice both locally and nationally.'

The name will be announced in March, before the Manchester sitting,

The Supreme Court first sat outside London in 2017 when it heard cases in Edinburgh, then in Belfast and Cardiff in 2019.
