When Mark Evans ascends from Law Society VP to president later this year, could he be the society’s fastest president yet? Obiter has no way of checking, but among the 17-strong Law Society team that completed a 5k run by lawyers for children with disabilities charity Skylarks on Thursday evening, Evans was the one using it as a warm up for this Saturday's North Wales Ultra Marathon.

First place of around 500 runners, with a time of 15 minutes and 59 seconds, was Burgess Salmon PSL Matthew Battensby, who also won last year. But Obiter wonders if there is something in the water over at Slaughter and May? The firm took second place among the men (Thomas Baines), first and third for the women (Deidre Healy and Olivia Hosker), and was the fastest team overall. Or perhaps Slaughters people are simply fired by relief that unlike their magic circle peers, they don’t have a US office to worry about right now…

It's the second 5k in Regent’s Park for Skylarks (Skylarks - Home) organised by agency MD Communications. A few baffled members of the public who had just gone for their regular run in the park got sucked into the mix, Obiter noticed, nonetheless cheered on by, among others, former solicitor general Lord Garnier KC.

Evans has entered the ballot for the 2026 London Marathon. If you are running it this Sunday, Obiter’s colleague John Hyde (john.hyde@lawsociety.org.uk) would love to hear from you.
