Your lead letter of 16 December was misleading to those who are unaware of current discussions in the Law Society Council, of which the writer is a member, to develop policy on the government green paper affecting access to justice.

There are about 450 firms in my constituency and they rank among those most affected by continuing, shambolic changes to public funding of their daily work. My members express to me overwhelming support, praise and gratitude for the leadership shown by the president of the Law Society in meeting the Legal Services Commission and those steering them. Even those with contrary financial interests support the principled policy adopted by the Society on behalf of the entire profession.

Those interested and with ideas can and do contribute to frequent practitioner group meetings and work within the Law Society and its Council to develop a coherent policy that government can be persuaded to adopt. The fight has a purpose and my members support it.

Michael Garson, Law Society Council member, Central & South Middlesex
