The Solicitors Regulation Authority is to ‘revisit’ its equality and diversity strategy after criticism from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

The strategy was published this month following Lord Ouseley’s report on the disproportionate number of black and minority ethnic solicitors facing disciplinary hearings. It has 12 objectives and 40 actions, mainly involving better understanding of the problem. The commission is one of 133 organisations, groups and individuals to comment.

Among the commission’s fears is that actions ‘will get lost and not be implemented’ because of the number of actions and lack of prioritisation. It said actions could get ‘lost and bogged down with bureaucracy’. The strategy also makes ‘no mention of gender’, the commission pointed out.

SRA board chairman Peter Williamson defended the strategy against charges of over-ambition.
