As an experienced practitioner in the field of private client law, I am always pleased to see solicitors, old and new, wishing to practise in this complex and rewarding area of law.

However, I do think we need to address the assumption that a five-day intensive course is sufficient to enable a solicitor practising in another field of law to practise effectively in this demanding discipline.

This is simply not possible and we devalue our profession if we give the impression that specialisms can be acquired so easily. Of course, a short ‘refresher’ course will be a good start for a lawyer wishing to practise in a new field, but no more than that.

There is no substitute for developing a knowledge base and acquiring deep experience. I encourage all members of my team to acquire full membership of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. I would also strongly encourage any lawyers wishing to specialise in private client law to join the Law Society Private Client Section and Solicitors for the Elderly.
