Former human rights lawyer Phil Shiner will be sentenced next Monday following his guilty plea on fraud charges related to claims against British soldiers in Iraq.

Shiner’s sentencing hearing had been listed for yesterday (2 December). No reason was given for the vacated sentencing date.

Shiner, formerly principal solicitor of Brimingham-based Public Interest Lawyers, made legal aid claims of around £200,000 in 2007 but failed to disclose to the Legal Service Commission that his firm had cold-called clients and made unsolicited approaches to potential clients in Iraq.

He also failed to disclose that he was paying referral fees.

Shiner was struck off the roll in 2017 for 22 charges of professional misconduct.
