I read with interest the article by Joshua Rozenberg, and the letters from David Bermingham and Jago Russell.

I deal with the realities that extradition clients face on a day-to-day basis. I have seen people taken to other countries where they have in fact already been acquitted of the crimes of which they are accused. I have seen people forcibly taken to other countries who were then acquitted after spending months in terrible prison conditions (in Europe). And I have clients, such as Gary McKinnon, who are so distraught at the thought of extradition that they would undoubtedly commit suicide rather than face the prospect.

David Bermingham is quite right that the recent extradition review has missed a real opportunity to improve on the extradition process. In particular, the ‘forum’ issue is one that has already been legislated and could easily be implemented. It is my understanding that the Extradition Review Team did not interview one defence practitioner.

It is difficult to understand how they have reached their conclusions when they appear to have only taken one side of the story.
