I am a newly qualified criminal defence solicitor. I write with reference to your recent item on NatWest’s decision effectively to scrap graduate loans.

I am one of those solicitors who would not have made it without such financial backing. I came from a comprehensive school, with working-class parents.

I worked part-time throughout my studies and yet was still reliant on a loan as big as a small mortgage to further my prospects.

In the end I borrowed £32,000 from NatWest.

Every payday I curse this fact but the reality is that, without the availability of such products, I would not be where I am today.

I have £18,000 left to pay but I am qualified, which is priceless.

It was a huge risk that I took at the age of 21 but at least I was able to take that risk. If I was even contemplating embarking on a legal career today, I would not be in a position to go to university as an undergraduate – let alone embark on the LPC.

The profession should not be restricted to those whose parents can afford it. It seems that this is exactly what is about to happen.

Shame on you NatWest.
